This story caught my eye as being one of the strangest news stories I've read in a long, long time. Weird!

- Could this be the origin of the cockney phrase 'plates-of-meat'for feet, I wonder? :-)

So much for modern technology and government initiatives. The Inland Revenue still haven't got their self-assesment service back on line yet. It has to be completed by the end of September and I just want to get on with it, so I've resorted to calling them up and asking them to send me a form through. It *really* grates to have to resort to filling in paper based forms, but I want to get it out of the way before the wedding build-up really starts. Bah!

Steff sent this through to me yesterday, I thought it was really entertaining, especially as it came from the newspaper of my home town.

Friday was another warm evening where we ended up having a couple of beers on the beach, this time at Gemini bar (see also: this review). Then we jumped on train to go and see our friends at New Scientist who were having a party at Ormonds in London to celebrate their winning the Interactive Consumer Magazine of the Year award. It was great to catch up with everyone (thanks for invite!) and well done, guys!

It was a beautiful day here in Brighton yesterday and so we went for a walk along the beach and decided to stop for a pint. This was a really splendid way of spending time, drinking beer watching the wakeboarders fall in the sea. We then headed off to the BNM social at the Sussex Arts Club (quite an interesting place) and met some new people, and met up with some we'd met before. As we were heading home, we discovered that one of the restaurants in Boyce's Street is being refitted to become a Nando's and is due to open in August. This is great news for us as Nando's is one of the only things we've missed about not being in Ealing. Nando's is great takeaway food, tasty chicken with a peri peri sauce. Yummmm! Roll on August.

And I've just spotted this, a page dedicated to chants about Rio Ferdinand, to the tune of Duran Duran's Rio. My current favourite is "His name is Rio and he plays for Engerland, Oh Rio, Rio take us to the promised land."

The world cup is really starting to get interesting now. 4 of the teams to make it to the quarter finals are not who I expected to see there. So, the quarters line up as:
There are some interesting and hard to call matches there. Posted by Jane at 2:33 PM
- England v Brazil - Friday 7.30am UK time
- Germany v USA - Friday 12.30pm UK time
- Spain v South Korea - Saturday 7.30am UK time
- Senegal v Turkey - Saturday 12.30pm UK time
- We're just as surprised here in the states about the results as you all are...we never thought we'd get past Portugal.

- ...and from Italy, we just heard that the manager of our local Serie 'A' team, Perugia, is sacking the Korean player who scored the goal which put Italy out yesterday. Bad losers or what?!

One of the BNM list members, Tristan, is doing the London to Brighton bike ride on. It's in aid of the British Heart Foundation, so go on, sponsor him.
Posted by Jane at 11:33 AM
- ...we've sponsored him. Not sure if Tristan knows how nasty the hills leading into Brighton are going to be.
Posted by Richard on 2002-06-13 20:54:46
- He did it.
Well done Tristan. See http://brightonnewmedia.org/pipermail/bnmlist/2002-June/010529.html for his comments.

Last night we were at a photo exhibition at the Gardner Arts Centre called It's Wrong to Wish on Space Hardware. The trigger to go was the combination of having a copy of Orbit: NASA Astronauts Photograph the Earth and also loving the Billy Bragg song that the title is taken from (New England).
It was a free exhibition, and it was of a size that occupied us for about 15 minutes. There was a mix of stuff: official NASA prints (my personal favourites), photos of the Russian space programme (best: a cosmonaut ready to go, but sitting on a nasty 70s sofa in what looked like someone's living room), plus fake space shots: pictures of pancakes that resembled the moon, and windscreen bug splat that looked like the night sky.

We watched a new tv programme - Six Feet Under - last night (it was actually shown on Monday, but I'd got Tivo to record it because the Guardian had said it was a must watch). It was really entertaining and very well put together (Alan Ball, producer of American Beauty, is one of the directors). From the show's website
"One of the most acclaimed shows of the 2001 season, SIX FEET UNDER takes a darkly comic look at the Fishers, a dysfunctional family who own and operate an independent funeral home in Los Angeles. Patriarch Nathaniel Fisher is no longer living (except in the hearts and visions of his family). So his wife Ruth, sons Nate and David, and daughter Claire are left to cope with the routine and not-so-routine aspects of life in the grief-management business.".
As usual, we're trailing behind the Americans here, and they're already on to Season 2.One of the more annoying things was that I recognised the actress who plays Brenda Chenowith - Rachel Griffiths, but couldn't remember where I knew her from. Thanks to her biography I find that it's because she was Rhonda in Muriel's Wedding (which incidently is one of our favourite films).
The next episode is showing on Channel 4 on Monday evening at 11.10pm - set the video for it.

Yay! Go England. We go through to the next round and the Nigerians and the Argentines go home. For a 0-0 draw it was pretty tense stuff at times but, we're through and we play Denmark at lunchtime on Saturday.
I watched it at home and then cycled in to work to start the rest of my day - flexi time is a wonderful thing
Posted by Jane at 9:07 AM
- and the funniest thing...
is the front page of the daily star which went to press (last night i guess) about how we thrashed nigeria 3-0 and sent them home with no points :)

Well done Ireland. We've just been listening to the Ireland v Saudi Arabia game on Radio 5 in the office and it's been a great game to listen to. I'm planning on watching the highlights on the tv later tonight. Now, I just want England to do the same tomorrow and get through to the second round as well. Come on England.

On Friday evening, after the football we went out for a few beers with Jeremy and Kirsty. As we were leaving the pub (the Three Jolly Butchers in Brighton) there were a 4 people with white scientist coats on and a large bin on wheels. We decided to see what it was all about and found out that they were giving out packets of Shoks (new crisp snacks made by Hula Hoops).
We tried them today, we had a packet of Totally Cheesy and a packet of Full-On Onion ones. They're like hula hoops, only smaller. The onion ones weren't particularly oniony but the cheesy ones were okay. Both tasted of artificial flavouring though.
Posted by Jane at 3:39 PM
- The snack from hell....
A triumph of marketing hype over content. Do you not realise, these things are made from recycled chicken-beaks and chemicals? What's wrong with black olives, or at a pinch, pork scratchings?
Posted by Marc on 2002-06-11 23:12:48
Yeah! England beat Argentina for the first time in years, about 30 years I think. The last 20 minutes was nail biting stuff though.

Someone on BNM posted a link to Showing The Game Information Service. This is being run in Sussex during the World Cup as a pilot scheme, and it sounds like a great idea. An easy way to make sure that you find a pub that is showing a game, and also get an idea on whether the pub has a big screen or just a normal tv.

Apparently ITV have an answer to mini Motty, you can also download Desktop Des, a mini Des Lynam to sit on your desktop. Desktop Des appears to be sponsored by Tic Tac and doesn't do as many interesting things as Motty, but even Motty is quite delayed with his goal reports unfortunately
Posted by Jane at 9:47 AMI think I'll stick with Motty as well as the radio/tv coverage.
We've been out searching for office space this afternoon and unfortunately there doesn't seem to be that much quality space available in the Brighton area. We only looked at one place today and it reminded me of a student house, dark and a bit dingey. It was a flat really, not purpose built office space and it had a pale pink and black bathroom, complete with a bath! Not very professional looking really.

We were bored so we caught up on a back-log of Frasier's we had to watch. It's still good, but it's not a must watch any more, hence the accumulation. Anyway... one thing that struck me about a couple of the episodes was the terrible, terrible product placement. They had a Segway in one episode and a Aibo in another. They were in the show for no reason at all, and did nothing for the story. I prefer to take my product placement in a more subtile, subliminal way, thanks. For the Segway or an Aibo I'd happily sit and watch a 30 minute infomercial. No need to "sneek" them into a show like Frasier.

Wow, I'm impressed. I've used the pixology service quite a few times now to get digital photos produced on photographic paper and the service has always been pretty good. I send a set through on Tuesday (passport photos as well as some other snaps) and the photos arrived through the post this morning. Such a fast turnaround is so impressive. Unfortunately, my passport photos are too dark so I'm going to have to lighten them up before I send them off again.
Posted by Jane at 8:30 AM
- I forgot to mention that the service is quite reasonable as well. The prices depend on how many photos of a particular size you order, and delivery (at least with BT) is £1.50.
My passports photo arrived today, and they're much better.

Having gathered together all the information I need to fill in my tax return for 2001/02 online - mostly I've been waiting for the Inland Revenue to send me a username for the site - I was somewhat concerned to read that this facility has been withdrawn "whilst we are carrying out system assurance checks" (apparently users could view other users tax returns - doh!). Guess I'll have to wait until they fix the problem.

I gained a desk toy! Susie left me her Peekin' Zeke. My new adopted friend is the 4th one down, the rainbow one. Apparently Peekin' Zeke's nose and hands can even hold onto your notes and memos. I'll have to give that a try later, once he's settled in.
Posted by Jane at 12:08 PM
- Spooky resemblence...
Congrats on the new addition to the family.
Rather scarily, the ginger Zeke looks like me on a bad day... :-)
Posted by Carin on 2002-06-05 16:23:54
- That's pretty unfortunate Carin :-)
My Zeke is quite cute, but doesn't point out any mistakes in what I'm typing. I'm going to have to train him to spot the errors :-)

Well, looks like it was the week for Goodbyes. Not only did we have to say goodbye to Suz on Saturday, but Steff had to say goodbye to her friends Lindsay and Matt on Thursday as they emigrated to Australia. So now we're feeling sorry for each other as well as ourselves

It's been a lovely, sunny day today and it was really great to get a text message from Jeremy to say that he and Kirsty were going to head down to the beach for a barbeque and did we want to join them. We'd already got some food sorted out as we'd planned to have one over the weekend anyways, and so we went and joined them and we spent a very pleasant afternoon feasting ourselves on chicken wings, sausages, lamb kebabs etc whilst drinking a couple of beers. Just what Sunday afternoons are made for.
Posted by Jane at 5:38 PM
On Friday evening we went on a bit of a pub crawl as Susie's leaving do. But this was no ordinary pub crawl - we played pub golf. We had a 9 pub golf course and we had a set drink and amount to do in every pub. To make par we had to drink what was on the card. To get a birdie we had to drink double the quantity, an eagle was double the quantity and a single spirit, an albatross was double the quantity and a double spirit and a hole in one was an albatross downed in one!
Our course and drinks were:
We only got as far as the Western Front by closing time, so both Weatherspoons and the club House (The Grand Hotel again) were missed out on. Not a great shame really as we'd all had quite enough to drink by then. Don't forget to take a look at the photos. Posted by Jane at 10:34 AM
- The Grand Hotel - Long Island Ice Tea or other cocktail - Par 3
- The Walkabout Lodge - Pint - Par 5
- The Fiddlers Elbow - Half - Par 4
- The Cricketers - Half - Par 4
- The Bath Arms - Pint - Par 5
- The Font and Firkin - Half - Par 3
- The Victory - Half - Par 4
- The Western Front - Half - Par 3
- Weatherspoons - Pint - Par 5
- Looks like you all had a great time! What a fun idea :-)
