We were on the beach the other night with Jeremy. It was great to be back in a cool costal breeze after the heat of the day. All good stuff, but I fell foul of Too Much Lager, and I didn't feel too great the following morning. I have a sneaking suspicion that the Ireland trip has pushed me over the edge and I'm on the road to being a Bitter drinker. There is a difference.

It's a beautiful hot and sunny day here in Brighton, and I'm suffering. Our office has no air conditioning, so we have the windows open and the fan blowing but it's not really cooling me down. Normally, we're really casual here, and so in normal circumstances I'd have been sitting here in t-shirt and shorts. Unfortunately today we're all "suited and booted" for a meeting in London this afternoon, of all the days we have to be smart. Still at least the car has air conditioning so the journey won't be so bad...

Whilst we were in Hull at the weekend, Mum and Dad were telling us the unfortunate tale of an elderly friend. It seems that this lady had had her handbag stolen from inside her house twice within 2 weeks. The first time, they'd broken the back door to get in. She was inside but didn't see or hear anything - just found a broken door and no handbag. The second time, she came downstairs to find a man in her kitchen, she asked him what he was doing in her house and he left, with the handbag. No sign has been found of either of the bags, or the people. But how scary must that be, to find a man in your kitchen. She was very lucky that he just ran off, and didn't decide to add battery to his crimes. *Shudder*

If you ever want to guarantee good weather for an event or other, then just check and see if we're likely to be driving to Hull or anywhere else involving lots of motorways. We always seem to be sitting in stationery traffic on the hottest days of the year.

Our journey on Friday was horrid. Because there had been a tanker overturned on the Surrey section of the M25 we decided to try a different route and headed off via Dartford, M11, A14, A1 and then on the usual route. THe M25 was busy, then the M11 had roadworks and there was a broken down car on the A14 (causing tailbacks of 12 miles or so). It took us 7 hours to get from Brighton to Hull and we were both heartily fed up by the time we got there.

In total contrast, we left Hull a little earlier than usual today and managed the journey back to Brighton in 4.5 hours - the roads were great. Because it was such a hot day we figure lots of people had decided to stay wherever they were for a little longer, meaning we had a smooth run. Hurrah!

I heard this news story on the radio this morning. Apparently, Burger King, MacDonalds, Wendys and KFC are being sued by a group of obese americans. This could be an interesting case to keep an eye on. If they suceed then will the Fast Food Outlets have to go the way of the cigarette companies and have "Caution: This product may lead to obesity, heart disease and diabetes." warnings all over them?

Well, the office move tale continues. We started looking for a new office in May as we need to move out of the current place by September. We found somewhere we liked, and made an offer, had it accepted and then got the solicitors to deal with it. All that time and we only find out yesterday that their deposit and rent arrangements aren't suitable for us. So, we've had a change of plan and are going to be moving into serviced offices nearby. We don't get to be in Brighton Marina Village any more, but we do get to be near Woodies Longboard Diner next to Ocean Sports. :-).

Last night we were at ecademy in London to hear a talk by Jason Porter, one of the founders of Friends reunited. He gave us the history, and a few facts: 10,000 people joining the site per day; they built the site in a couple of weeks ("and it shows", heckled Dave). But nothing really interesting. It would have been a wasted day if we hadn't also been in town to meet up with some friends.

A while ago I spotted a new book by Fi Glover in a "2 for £10" offer at a book stop. Given that I liked her previous book (and so did Jane), I figured this would be more of the same and bought it.

Last week, I was about to begin a two-and-a-half hour train journey across Ireland. I opened the book and thought "Hmm... this looks familiar". Turns out the publishers had slapped on some new cover art and changed the title from "I am an oil tanker" to "Travels with my radio". Other than that, it's exactly the same book. Bah.

So, when it comes to impulse purchases in book shops, just say no. And when embarking on a long train journey across Ireland, make sure you have a back up book.

So, a guy has just beaten the world record for visiting all the stations on the London Underground in the shortest amount of time - more here. The guy is from Nottingham and says it's been an ambition since he was a child and first went on a tube. It's quite obvious he doesn't live or work in London though, it's normally enough of a hassle just taking the tubes you need to get to work, never mind trying to visit all the stations on the network. It says he beat the previous best by 40 minutes, but is any allowance made for the new stations that are added? Like the Jubilee line extension when that opened a couple of years ago? Is this particular record getting harder to beat every time a new station is added?

The photos of our Ireland trip are now up on the site. The journal will get written up in due course, but there are several things above that on my "to do" list... like organise a wedding!

Whilst we were in Ireland, Brighton was host to Normstock II, the second Big Beach Boutique event. Last year there were around 60,000 people on the beach for Fat Boy Slim's free event, this year there were 250,000. There are photos and a few more details available here.

Well, we're back in Brighton now after an action packed week in Ireland. I haven't had time to process the (many) photos yet, or write up the journal but it'll happen sometime soon (ish!). We were on a cycling trip with Irish Cycling Safaris and we had a great time - the people on the trip were really good fun and we all got along really well. We did the Connemara, Galway and Mayo tour, and some of the scenery was beautiful. We were very lucky with the weather as we only had showers on 2 days, which is a bit of a miracle for the summer in Ireland this year which is shaping up to be the worst for many years.

Apologies to anyone who has been spammed from janeandrichard.co.uk. I got an "Undelivered Mail" report the other day for a mail that I didn't send. It had a subject of "Feest". Not much I can do about it, other than apologise. Sorry!

Panic on the streets of London

Panic gripped the streets of London this morning when patches of sky took on an unusual blue colour and a ball of fire appeared above the city.

The phenomenon, known as 'The Sun' and commonly found in Mediterranean countries, unleashed a terrifying heat and brightness upon the capital, causing many pedestrians to take off their hats and scarves, while motorists were able to turn both their headlights and wipers off. Tony Blair urged people to be calm and return to work as normal stating: "We've seen this sort of thing before", he said,"but it never lasts."

There are forecasts that 'The Sun' could be seen throughout the weekend but a spokesman for No.10 said, "I wouldn't hold my breath".

Thanks to Anna for sharing that :-)

Hmm, weird. The socks I'm wearing today seem to have a slightly velcro like property to them. Or at least they stick ever so slightly to the carpet in the office (yes, I spend most of my day wandering around in my socks). Very strange. Haven't noticed it before, but then these don't get worn very often - they're kind of an emergency pair.

We were in Hull at the weekend (see the wedlog) and were doing some shopping at Princes Quay. We noticed a lot of canoeists in the water that surrounds the shopping centre, and it turned out to be the Hull International Canoe Polo competition. Now we'd never seen Canoe Polo before, and the first game we watched was a ladies game and it was really interesting. Later in the afternoon, after we'd finished shopping, we stopped and watch a couple of the mens games, and were amazed at how aggressive, fast and enjoyable to watch they were. The Hull event seems to be an annual event, so hopefully we'll remember to keep an eye out for it next year and go and watch some more games.

The Degree Confluence Project is interesting: "The goal of the project is to visit each of the latitude and longitude integer degree intersections in the world, and to take pictures at each location". There are 12,629 still to do, but France is now "done".

What a pleasant evening. It's Jeremy's birthday today so we've just been to the Three Jolly Butchers for a couple of pints with the birthday boy. It's a really nice pub, and is in danger of becoming our "local" - fairly quiet, serves good beer, not too busy (sounds like we're getting old doesn't it??? - ho hum).

For Jeremy's birthday we bought him the Executive Air Hockey Game from the Discovery store. Somehow, I think this will be arriving in the office tomorrow, actually, make that I *hope* this will be arriving in the office tomorrow :-D. Apologies to anyone in the Three Jolly Butchers this evening who wondered what the hell the noise was - that was us. Sorry!

I was working in Essex today, and at lunch time we jumped in the car and headed out. As you might imagine, the roads were busy. At one roundabout a driver had stopped across the roundabout blocking traffic. A breakdown, right? No. She was out of her car chasing a small rabbit back into the grassy central reservation. Isn't that cute/insane [delete as applicable]
