I used to work on the corner of Spitalfields market. Jane told me about these photos: the BBC are asking for your snaps.

Well, at least the councillers have approved the West Pier restoration plans. The campaigners against the plans have vowed to fight on to save their seafront views. Personally, I believe if they protest too much the pier will beyond repair and will have to go - and that's something I'd hate to see.

Following on from a blog almost a year ago, Wired News are running an article on how a man was murdered in Nigeria's consul in the Czech Republic by a guy who was conned out of his money as part of one of the Nigerian bank scams. It seems he'd be cheated out of his money, and had been visiting the Consul regularly for a year trying to recover the money he had lost.

One of my fave pictures of all time: the earth at night (big; there's a smaller version). The picture was created by joining up photos from satellites, according to the NASA write up.

Yesterday I went to the Printwear and Promotion show at the NEC in Birmingham. As I said last week, most of the conferences I've been to have been technical for technicians so this one was a complete change as there were lots of people selling print and embroidery machines as well as the new ranges from clothing suppliers. We went to see what was on offer for the Summer offering from Igloo Life and found some possible new suppliers to supplement what we already offer. It was a long day though, Brighton to Birmingham is a long drive when you only spend 3 hours at the show.

The BBC are doing a special holiday programme on 50 things to do before you die. Currently they're accepting submissions from people suggesting ideas of what they've done or what they'd like to do - I've submitted two, one I've done and one I'd love to do.

So, the one I've done is see an eclipse [Hungary 1999] and the one I'd love to do is see the northern lights. I'm sure I can think of many more, but I thought two was a good start :-)

As a quick search of our previous blogs will tell you, we love our Tivo. But, you can't get them in the UK anymore - bah! Need To Know helpfully provided some information in Friday's newsletter of a couple of build your own alternatives Freevo and MythTV. They look kind of interesting, and I guess we'll investigate further if anything should happen to our Tivo.

The web logs for this site tell us that people have been asking search engines questions like "when is pancake day" or "pancake day 2003 UK" and ending up on a page of pancake pictures from last year. Not very helpful. So, for those of your searching for this information....This year, pancake day is Tuesday 4th March (2003).

Pancake day is always the day before Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is 40 days before Easter. And you can work out the date for Easter with some maths (including C source code. Woohoo).

I've been reading bits of the The Sydney Morning Herald (Jono's fault), and it made for interesting reading: Eriksson upbeat despite loss (BBC) vs. Savour the perfect 10 (SMH). More interesting, though, is the SMH's take on the UK press ('Load of roo-bish' causes a stink on Fleet Street) and the BBC's take on the Australian press (Pom-bashing gathers pace).

It's quite odd getting different perspectives from "local" sources. I might add the San Francisco Chronicle to my reading too.

So, according to this article, Google was the number one global brand for 2002. Okay, admittedly, it was an on-line poll :-)! However, in Europe and Africa, Nokia was top, with Google not even making the top 10.

Bah! Shopsmart.com is no longer :-(. I used to use it quite a bit to compare the price of books, CDs and DVDs across the different stores. Looks like I'll have to get used to using kelkoo instead.

Today I went to the Technology for Marketing show at Kensington Olympia with Jeremy. All the previous exhibitions I've been to have all been purely technology based (well, except for the Ideal Home Show which doesn't really count!) and so it made a change to see a show which targets a specific sector. The exhibition seemed to be mainly full of businesses offering direct marketing services, CRM services or search engine placements. We found one company who were doing something similar to Fluid Network and so we had a long chat with them.

And just for the record, the best conference freebies were a red stress frog, and a light-up pen.

Does anyone happen to have a copy of January's Outdoor Photography Magazine that I could beg, borrow or steal from them? Apparently there is an article reviewing tripods that I'd like to get my hands on. Ta!

This was taken from the car on Sunday night as we drove back from Margate. Just thought it was fun!

I've been a fan of Terry Gilliam films for a while, although he's perhaps more famous for the not making films, or almost making films, or maybe for film studious worrying about the films he makes with huge piles of their money. While trying to track down the DVD version of Brazil, I spotted the following on the Terry Gilliam Fanzine: "Lost in La Mancha gains BAFTA nomination". Turns out that Lost in La Mancha is the documentary of the making of his film, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote that failed to be made (did that make any sense?). Lost in La Mancha was apparently released in August 2002, and should be on DVD by the end of the month (view the trailer).

Police at entrance to the pier

So, it's not enough that the West Pier is slowly collapsing into the sea, but the Palace Pier had to get in on the act too. Last night, one of the fair rides caught on fire, and blazed into the night sky (apparently - I didn't hear anything about it until 10pm or so by which time it was all out). I cycled off this morning to take a look and the pier generally still looks intact. The Police said that they thought that only the Ghost Train and the Helter Skelter had been damaged, and that all the structures still seemed to be ok, although they needed the engineers to come and check it out.

We went to meet Paul and Tess's new baby last night in the hospital. I think that Max is the youngest baby I've ever met (he was just over a day old) and it made a nice change to be going to a hospital for a nice reason, and in fact I think it's the only time I've ever been visiting to a hospital for a birth rather than some illness or ailment or other.

Afterwards, we headed off to the Earth, Moon and Stars pub for a Virtual Festival meeting. The Virtual Festival is run during May (same time as the Brighton Festival) and tries to introduce new technologies to the community, via multimedia days, and the like. We thought we'd offer our services and see how we could help.

Grrrr.... I've been using the search facility on my (newly xp'd) pc a lot this morning, desperately trying to find a function in one of my source files. I knew it was there, as the code works, but I couldn't find it. I was using the "A word of phrase in the file" search and it was bringing back no results. So, I googled it and found this. Apparently source code files aren't very "relevant" and so those helpful people at M$ have removed them from the search so as not to "pollute" the results. Thanks for that then!
